Management of Livestock Pigs

Pig is a very efficient meat-producing livestock, so pigs have high economic value as beef cattle. In addition to rapid body growth, pigs are also able to utilize all types of agricultural waste, does not require extensive ground maintenance, can increase soil fertility and have a high litter size. But until now the potential is still not able to be utilized properly because of limited consumer and maintenance system is not adequate.

Seed Selection

Selection of good seeds is the first step in the success of a livestock business. Requirements to consider when selecting seedlings:

There are various kinds of pig pens, each distinguished according to its construction and usefulness.

Pig Feed

Feed is one of the important factors in the pig business. Because 60% of the total cost is spent on the needs of the mother pigs (seed), and 80% for the purposes of fattening pigs. Therefore one thing to note here is that although pigs are naturally classified as animals that eat very greedy, and like to eat anything, they need to be fed with the correct calculation. Keep in mind that pigs belong to animals that have simple digestive tools, which are incapable of digesting high-fiber raw materials. Feed for pigs is generally a mixture of various food items given in a certain period of time (rations).

Some important factors that must be considered by farmers in feeding/rationing on pigs are as follows:

  • Food Substance

All the ingredients required by pigs consist mainly of six basic elements: carbohydrates, crude fiber, fats, proteins, vitamins, minerals, and water.

  • Preparation of Rations

If the number of pigs that only a few tail, then the pig can be given the remains of food from the kitchen, such as banana skin, papaya, vegetables, rice and so forth. But no matter how much leftover food can be given, the practice of giving such food is less accountable. Because the food is not a ration that has the composition of food substances in the right balance as required by the pig’s body for the purposes of growth and production.
